Thoughts

If you’re absent during my struggle, don’t expect to be present during my success.

Untitled #6 (Sitting in silence)

I sit in silence wondering where you are

Are you okay?

Did you arrive at your destination safely

Wild thoughts race of all the things

That could have went wrong today

Of all the things that could be found

Truth was nowhere in sight

My tears you maw on between your gum and cheek

Loving Lies and Cold alibis

Sitting here in silence wondering where you are

I realize

I don’t know who you are

The Husband's Whore

Posted by Kimberly Powell on Monday, August 9, 2010, In : Poetry
I am not a whore
But I have been whoring myself out
for a man that won't commit to anything
But his Tuesday night basketball game
I am his whore
on my knees, on my back, on my feet,
You see that's me in costume for role play
pretending to be a wife by cooking and cleaning

Sylvester

I come from a town with

6 traffic lights and a train

Round backside

Dark brown eyes

Get me smiles in this town

6 traffic lights and a train

Too often on my brain

Is all the pain

Days of bumble bees

Water hoses and dogs

From these trees

My people use to hang

Its wild right

6 traffic lights and a train

Fourteen years later

Still crying for Pam, Robert, and Mayo

Gone too soon

Too soon forgotten

In my mind class of 99 will forever live on

Cotton fie...

If It Is Not You

Posted by Kimberly Powell on Saturday, April 24, 2010, In : Poetry

Sitting here cold and alone

Thinking of the loves that came before you

Wondering if this is really the end or

Will others follow you

These feelings I have I can no longer keep inside

Stewing while the outside dies

My tears at night you pretend no see

The sounds of my heart breaking

Echo between the sheets

But your attention I still seek

Though my love for you is different

My feelings of inadequacies are same

Talking to you gets me no ...

What is Poetry?

Posted by Kimberly Powell on Friday, March 20, 2009, In : Poetry
What is Poetry?

Hmm, what an excellent question.  W.H. Auden calls it "memorable speech."  William Wordsworth believes poetry is "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings."  My personal definition of poetry is simplier.  I believe that poetry is freedom of words.  Poetry gives a person the freedom to say things that we otherwise would never have the courage to say.  Throughout my life poetry has freed me from an emotional prison.

What does poetry mean to you?
